Signpost 2020

'Signpost 2020' was created in honor of those we have lost and in memory of a pivotal year.
Driving down the highway, processing all the pain and loss of a terrible year and trying to make sense of how to move forward, a man stepped out in front of me with a tattered red stop sign. With the sun streaming sharp across him, his message spoke to my heart and gave birth to this life-size drawing.
I cannot explain exactly what ‘STOP’ means—it translates differently for everyone.
It seems many of us were broken down in a very personalized way and emerged from 2020 drastically changed. In a season where we all had to be brave enough to learn to do things different, for me, STOP meant I could no longer keep driving in the lane I was in, or I was in danger of going headfirst into oncoming traffic. It meant in almost every aspect of my life, I would have to stop completely, gather myself, then change course and drive in what felt like the wrong lane.
It was time I learned to cherish every heartbeat and every breath.
As we collectively begin to take a cautious step forward and work to repair or build new roads ahead, 'Signpost 2020' continues to remind us to STOP to honor all those we have loved and lost and to give thanks for all who remain standing by our side.
