Madonna & Child
Mixed Media on Paper - Graphite & Ink, 2019 / 28 x 18 inch
The work translates the beauty of the moment, while gently questioning religious, racial, and gender stereotypes.
Many figurative artists explore the theme of Madonna and Child. I have tried before and failed. Though I had no intention of creating my 'Madonna and Child' when I took reference photos and started sketches for this piece, as I stepped back from the finished work, I felt a strong conviction I could title it nothing else. Though, I was initially intimidated to challenge tradition by labeling this interaction with such a heavy connotation.
Reference photos for 'Madonna and Child' and all other wok in the Sanding in the Sun series were taken outside of Kigali, Rwanda.
